Simonszand

The small uninhabited island dunes Simonszand located in the Wadden Sea between Schiermonnikoog and Rottumerplaat. It belongs to the municipality of Eemsmond.

The island consists of an elongated high sand of about 1.5 km in length and 750 meters width. It plays an important role as a resting place for birds such as the Red Knot and other beach runners as well as ducks. In addition Simonszand is an important resting place for seals and their offspring. Therefore, in 1999, the Ministerie van Landbouw decided that sailors their ships may no longer be dry fall near the island, since thereby the rest of the seals was significantly disrupted.
