Stockhorn

The stock horn seen from Thun

Amsoldingen with Stockhornkette

The stock horn is the highest peak in the Stockhornkette. The striking Stockhornstrasse summit is immediately apparent when you drive through the Guerbetal or the Aare Valley towards the Bernese Oberland. Since it consists of an almost vertically arranged rock plate, it will appear depending on the viewing angle wide or pointed.

Since 1969, leads the Stockhornbahn, a cableway with the base station in Erlenbach im Simmental, to just below the summit. From there you can reach the top or through a 70 m long, wheelchair-accessible tunnel opened in 2013 panoramic viewing platform. From the platform you can see on the lake of Thun, on the Central Plateau and the Jura mountains on clear days, the Vosges and the Black Forest.

On the Simmental side, far from the peak, there are two small lakes, the Oberstockensee and Hinterstockensee. They are a popular destination for recreational fishing, as trout can be caught there. In addition, located in the Stockhornstrasse area several crags for climbers.

Since 2004, takes place every year in July, the stock horn Half Marathon. This run starts in Oberwil and ends on the floor horn. On the route of 21.1 km in length, a height difference of 1,353 meters ( 1'724 m/-371 m) is overcome.

Stockhornkette

The Pre-Alps is about 13 km long and separates the Simmental in the south from the north Stockental in OSO / NNW direction. It begins with Reutigen where the Simme leaves her valley and the chain of the Burgfluh described, respectively, separated by sneezing. First prominent peak is the Simmenfluh ( 1'422 m), which helps to shape the region with its powerful appearance. After Simmenfluh the ridge decreases again slightly and goes immediately into a broad back, the Alp Heiti over. From Stockental forth a second ridge rises, which dominates the previous ridge and the alp. The Nüschleten ( 1,987 m), the lasing mountain ( 2'019 m) and the Solhorn ( 2'017 m) are the three highest peaks on this ridge portion to the stock horn, which then expires in Strüssligrat. In front of the Stockhornstrasse north is the broad Walalpgrat ( 1,920 m), the beginning of the last ridge portion of Stockhornkette. It will follow the Möntschelenspitz ( 2,020 m), the Hohmad ( 2,075 m), the Stubenfluh ( 2,004 m) and the Chrummenfadenfluh ( 2'074 m). The latter already belongs actually to Gantrischgruppe adjacent to Stockhornkette in NNW.
