Suchá Hora

Sucha Hora (literally: Dry mountain; Szuchahora Hungarian, Polish Sucha Góra Orawska ) is a municipality in the north of Slovakia.

Location

The municipality is located in the Orava kotlina, a few kilometers north of the Tatra Mountains and is located directly on the Slovak- Polish border, which is 1 km east of the center. The Slovakian city Trstená is 13 km to the west, the Polish town of Zakopane 20 km to the southeast.

History

Originally inhabited by Vlachs community was founded in 1561 by Thurzos and mentioned as Ztarahora. The present name was mentioned in the late 16th century.

After the collapse of Austria - Hungary after the First World War, the nationality of the place between the newly formed Czechoslovakia and Poland was controversial. From July 20 1920 to June 3, 1924, then again in the period autumn 1938 - autumn 1939, the town belonged to Poland.

A majority of the population speaks today gorals dialect.
