Qualification criteria

At the competitions 128 athletes will participate, each of 64 women and men, including four athletes of the host NOCs and other four athletes, the World Taekwondo Federation ( WTF ) invited after the completion of the qualifying phase. Each NOK could total up to four athletes qualify, two women and men, but a maximum of one athlete per weight class. Decisive for the award of the starting places was the achievement of quota places.

The qualification phase began in July 2011 with the worldwide WTF Olympic Qualification Tournament in Baku. Each NOK allowed to use a maximum of four athletes in different weight classes. In each weight class athletes won the first three places a quota place. Between September 2011 and February 2012, then continental qualifying tournaments were held. NOCs were allowed to use an athlete, in which no quota place has been reached or no more athletes when two women and / or men had already won a quota place only in the weight classes. Per weight class qualify for these tournaments three athletes from Europe, Asia and America, two from Africa and one from Oceania.
