Tim Pawlenty

Timothy James " Tim " Pawlenty ( born November 27, 1960 in St. Paul, Minnesota ) is an American politician of the Republican Party. He held office from 6 January 2003 to January 3, 2011 as Governor of the State of Minnesota.

Biography

After studying law at the University of Minnesota Pawlenty was elected in 1994 as Member of Parliament in the House of Representatives from Minnesota. Originally he planned in 2002 as a candidate for the U.S. Senate, but at the request of Vice President Dick Cheney, he let his party colleague Norm Coleman go first. However, he made ​​the decision instead to run for the governorship. In a tight election, Pawlenty won against his rival candidate Roger Moe and Tim Penny and was thus on 6 January 2003, the 39th Governor of Minnesota. In 2006, he won by a margin of less than 23,000 votes ahead of the democratic candidate Mike Hatch, the gubernatorial elections again only very scarce.

In June 2009, he announced that he would not run again in the election in 2010 for the governorship. There have been media speculation about his seeking candidacy in the 2012 presidential election instead, but Pawlenty says that he has not made a decision about his future. On January 3, 2011, he handed over the governorship to the Democrats Mark Dayton, who had prevailed in the election against Republican candidate Tom Emmer.
