Tivoli, Lazio

Tivoli ( ancient name: Tibur ) is a city in the province of Rome in the Italian region Latium, located about 52 983 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 32 km east of Rome. The city's name became synonymous with amusement parks. Tivoli is seat of a Roman Catholic diocese.

Geography

The city lies on the River Aniene on the western slopes of the Monti Tiburtini.

History

Tibur was a city of the Latins who came up with the entire Lazio in the 4th century BC under Roman control ( municipium 90 BC). Outside the city, Emperor Hadrian built a sprawling villa complex, the Villa Adriana.

In the Middle Ages Tivoli was one of the most important places in the surroundings of Rome. Middle of the 16th century, the Pirro Ligorio for Cardinal Ippolito d' Este, the famous account of the water features in their garden Renaissance Villa d' Este.

The romantic setting of the city with the waterfalls of the Aniene and the ancient ruins has always attracted artists.

Policy

Sandro Gallotti ( PdL ) was elected in April 2010 to the mayor. His center-right alliance also with 18 of 30 seats, the majority in the City Council. His predecessor Giuseppe Baisi (PD ) was elected in April 2008, but resigned on 20 January 2010, as his center- left coalition broke apart.

A variation of the crest above shows a black eagle without crown, below a blue Wellenschildfuß with three black shaft threads for the river instead of in natural colors; the lettering Tibur superbum in black capital letters.
