Vescemont

Vescemont ( formerly German Wessenberg ) is a town in the French department of Territoire de Belfort in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Vescemont is located on 476 m above the sea, two kilometers east of Giromagny and about twelve kilometers north of the town of Belfort ( a straight line ). The village is located at the southern foot of the Vosges, on the edge of the basin of Giromagny, which extends between the Vosges mountains, the hills of the Forêt de Roppe and the Montagne de Salbert, in the valley of the Rosemontoise. It is located in the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges.

The area of ​​7.05 km ² municipal area includes a portion in the region of the Southern Vosges. The southern part of the area is occupied by the plateau at Vogesenfuß, which is on average 470 m. It is passed outside the settlement area of predominantly arable and meadow land. The area is drained by the Rosemontoise that for Savoureuse flows parallel to the south and just north of Belfort opens into this.

To the north, the municipality's area extends into the valley of Rosemontoise that by the wooded heights of the Vosges Massif (southern foothills of the Ballon d' Alsace) is surrounded. On the northwest side is the Mont Jean ( 786 m) and Mont Rouchon with the Forêt de Sapins, on the 988 m, the highest elevation of Vescemont is achieved. The eastern side of the valley is from the Forêt de Saint -André and the Tête du Mineur lined ( to 900 m).

To Vescemont the hamlet Planche- le- Prêtre include (510 m) in the valley of Rosemontoise as well as some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Vescemont are Lepuix and Riervescemont in the north, Lamadeleine -Val -des- Anges in the east, the south and Rougegoutte Giromagny in the West.

History

The municipal area of Vescemont numerous Roman coins have been found, suggesting a very early commission and possibly colonization of the site. Probably the village existed since the 11th century, but it is only in 1347 first mentioned. From this time the name Wessemberg and Know Mont are occupied. First, standing in the sphere of influence of the Counts of Montbéliard, the village mid-14th century came under the suzerainty of the Habsburg dynasty. Since the 11th century it belonged to the rule Rosemont. The Lords of Rosemont gave the village a noble family fief, which called itself Wessemberg.

Together with the Sundgau Vescemont came with the 1648 Peace of Westphalia to the French crown. Since 1793 it belonged to the Department of Haut -Rhin, however, remained in 1871 as part of the Territoire de Belfort as opposed to the rest of Alsace in France. Today Vescemont is a member of the comprehensive eight municipalities municipal association Communauté de communes la Haute Savoureuse.

Population

With 723 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Vescemont one of the small communities of the department of Territoire de Belfort. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891 629 persons were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the mid-1960s again. The settlement area of Vescemont has grown together with those of Giromagny and Rougegoutte.

Economy and infrastructure

Was Vescemont until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village.
