Vibo Valentia

Vibo Valentia is an Italian town with 33,118 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). It is the capital of the eponymous province in the Calabria region.

Geography

The city is located on a fertile plateau at 476 meters above sea level, only about six kilometers from the Tyrrhenian Sea and overlooked by the mountains of the Sila in the North Sea to the Aeolian island of Stromboli and on to the massif of the Aspromonte and the peak of Mount Etna in the South. To the east the hills connects.

The distance to Rome is 611 km, to Reggio Calabria there are 103 kilometers.

Borders the following municipalities: Briatico, Cessaniti, Filandari, Francica, Jonadi, Pizzo, San Gregorio d' Ippona, Onofrio and Stefanaconi.

History

The origins of the city are connected to a prähellenischen settlement called Veip, by the Greek colonists ( Magna Graecia ) colonized from Locri in the 7th century BC and in Hipponion (Greek Ἱππώνιον, latin Hipponium ) has been renamed.

The Lamezia Terme airport is 45 km away. On the former military airfield of Vibo Valentia, the Carabinieri entertain a Helicopter Squadron and an airmobile task force.
