Virginia D. Smith

Virginia Dodd Smith ( * June 30, 1911 in Randolph, Fremont County, Iowa, † January 23, 2006 in Sun City West, Arizona) was an American politician ( Republican). Between 1975 and 1991, she represented the third electoral district of the state of Nebraska in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Virginia Smith was born as Virginia Dodd and visited the Manti Rural School and Shenandoah High School in Iowa. She then studied until 1936 at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. On 27 August 1931 she married Haven Smith ( 1909-1997 ). The marriage remained childless.

The most of her life spent in Smiths Chappell in Deuel County. There they sat for the interests of the rural population and agriculture. Between 1950 and 1960 Virginia Smith worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In 1960 she was delegate at a conference convened by the President of Conference, which focused on children and adolescents. From 1971 to 1972 she served as chairman of a Presidential Commission, which took care of the development of rural areas. 1973 and 1974 she worked in similar commissions for the education and the Ministry of Commerce.

Virginia Smith took 1956-1972 as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in part and in 1974 was elected as a candidate of their party in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she replaced David T. Martin on January 3, 1975. Their election victory was indeed by a margin of only 737 votes very close, but still noteworthy because he ran against the then national trend, which precipitated after the Watergate affair in favor of the Democratic Party.

After she was able to defend its mandate in Congress in the next seven elections, she remained until January 3, 1991 at the House of Representatives. There they sat back to rural areas, especially in Nebraska, and was for a salary increase of members of Congress. Smith has at times been a member of the Budget Committee. In 1990 she gave up for reelection. After the end of her time in Congress, she withdrew into retirement.
