William Matthews (politician)

William Matthews ( born April 26, 1755 Cecil County, Maryland, † 1808 ) was an American politician. Between 1797 and 1799 he represented the state of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

About the youth and education of William Matthews nothing is handed down. He must have studied law, since 1778-1786, he was repeatedly judge in Cecil County. In the years 1786 to 1789 he sat in the House of Representatives from Maryland. End of the 1790s he became a member of the Federalist Party, founded by Alexander Hamilton.

In the congressional elections of 1796 Matthews was selected in the sixth electoral district of Maryland in the time which meets even in Philadelphia U.S. House of Representatives, where he became the successor of Gabriel Christie on March 4, 1797 then on March 4, 1799 and again his successor been. During his time in Congress, the diplomatic relations with France deteriorated. This development led later brink of war.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, the trace of William Matthews loses. He died about the year 1808 at a non- traditional site and was buried in the family cemetery in Cecil County.
