Zhatay

Schatai (Russian and Yakut Жатай ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia) in Russia) with 9504 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is located in the central part of the Republic, on the left bank of the Lena about 15 kilometers north ( downstream ) of the Republic capital of Yakutsk. Because of its location in the flat flood plain of the Lena, which is only just over six kilometers west bounded by the steeply rising to over 200 m altitude Lena Plateau, the place is highly prone to flooding. Each spring parts of the settlement are flooded.

Schatai forms a separate urban district ( okrug Gorodskoi ).

The climate is extremely continental. With an annual average temperature of -10.2 ° C, the mean temperature in the coldest month January is -42.7 ° C in the warmest month of July 18.7 ° C. The difference between the lowest ( -64.4 ° C) and highest ( 38.3 ° C ) for each measured temperature exceeds 100 ° C.

History

In April 1929, the present settlement with the establishment of a state farm for cultivation of grain, meat and dairy farming was begun instead. First, the village belonged to Rajon Yakutsk.

In 1936 a large tank farm was built. 1939, the Council of People 's Commissars of the Yakut ASSR and the head office decided Northern sea route ( Glavsevmorput ) to a dead channel of the Lena at Schatai ( Schataiski saton ) to build a harbor for wintering of ships of the Northern Fleet. The decision was implemented in the following years; also created other camps and construction equipment. On April 28, 1948 Schatai received the status of an urban-type settlement, which was directly under the administration of the nearby city of Yakutsk.

As part of the administrative reform in Russia Schatai was spun off by the Law of 30 November, 2004 an independent town district.

Townscape end businesses are the tank farm Yakutsk ( Jakutskaja neftebasa ) and a ship repair yard for Lena fleet.

West of the village takes you past the regional road R503, the Lena from Yakutsk the left bank down into the Rajonverwaltungszentrum Namzy follows.
