• Cambridge wins on March 15, the 13th Boat Race against Oxford in 25'45 ". The previously held at irregular intervals boat race is conducted annually from now on.
• October 13: On the initiative of Hermann von Aachen Hanneken the chess club was founded in 1856.

• The British toy retailer Isaac Spratt published the first printed rules for croquet.
• In the province of Canada, the first lacrosse club, the Montreal Lacrosse Club was founded.
• In Leipzig, the first time the German Gymnastics newspaper is published. The sports magazine is founded as a press organ of the German Gymnastics Federation and initially edited by Ernst Keil. The DTZ is the first significant paper in Germany, which deals with questions of gymnastics.
