1963–64 European Cup Winners' Cup

The European Cup Winners 'Cup 1963/64, was the fourth playout of the competition of European Football Cup Winners' Cup. 29 club teams from 28 countries took part, including defending champion Tottenham Hotspur, 23 reigning Cup Winners Cup finalists losing and 4 ( Olympique Lyon, Celtic Glasgow, Fenerbahce and the Linzer ASK). Hungary posted with MTK Budapest again the runner-up, there was a nationwide cup competition until 1964. Tottenham Hotspur was qualified as the defending champion.

From Germany, the DFB Cup winners Hamburger SV were, from the GDR of fdgb Cup Winner BSG Motor Zwickau, from Austria ÖFB Cupfinalist Linzer ASK and from Switzerland FC Basel at the start.

What was remarkable was the success of 16:1 winner Sporting Lisbon over APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus, the hitherto highest-scoring European game. It was so nice to catch up by Sporting in the quarter -final against Manchester United. After a 1:4 defeat at Old Trafford Stadium the Portuguese won the return match against the trained by the legendary Matt Busby Englishman - who had in their ranks, among others, Bobby Charlton, George Best, Denis Law and Nobby Stiles - 5-0.

The away goals rule was not yet considered. The final was decided on one game at a neutral venue.
