Background

The second World Cup race of the year did not occur until approximately five months after the season opener in South Africa. In the meantime, two not for the World Cup scoring formula 1 races were held, who had brought with Dan Gurney on Eagle and Mike Parkes on Ferrari two exceptional winners.

19 drivers were reported for the Monaco Grand Prix, of which pursuant to applicable safety regulations on the comparatively narrow track only the 16 quickest in qualifying, were allowed to participate in the race.

Training

The reigning world champion Jack Brabham secured the pole position alongside Ferrari driver Lorenzo Bandini. Behind John Surtees was followed by Honda and Denis Hulme in the second factory Brabham. Lotus driver Jim Clark formed together with the BRM Jackie Stewart on the third row.

The Cooper privately employed by Rob Walker, who was driven by Jo Siffert, reached a better starting place than the two factory cars.

Race

While Bandini took the lead, burst after a few meters Brabham engine. The Australians turned into a crowd of several competitors, although only Siffert's car was slightly damaged. The Swiss then had to insert a repair stop at the pits.

Clark fell in the second round back end of the field, while Hulme and Stewart managed to get passed the tip and Bandini took over. In the sixth round, Stewart took the lead before he had this position on lap 14 due to a gearbox failure re-emit at Hulme.

After Surtees was canceled due to an engine problem, the sequence at the top for several rounds remained constant. Hulme led before Bandini and Bruce McLaren. Clark had now worked his way back to fourth forward, but then had to retire due to a technical defect and Chris Amon left to the fourth place.

While Bandini caught up on the leading Hulme, McLaren had to make a pit stop of their achievement on the fifth. On lap 82 Bandini lost in the harbor chicane control of his car caught fire and rolled over. Bandini could not escape their own. After the fire had been deleted, he was rescued and taken to hospital.

Hulme finally won uncontested before Graham Hill and Chris Amon, the tire damage had cost in one of the last rounds of the second place.

Some of the Formula 1 pilots traveled immediately after the race in the USA in order to qualify for the Indianapolis 500.

Lorenzo Bandini died on Wednesday after the race at the hospital to the consequential damages of the accident.
