Background

After the team Tyrrell was always begun at the previous races of the season as March - customer team, the first use of the self-construction Tyrrell 001 at a World Championship race with voltage was expected after the vehicle in which not for the World Cup scoring race at Oulton Park two weeks earlier a had achieved promising result. The team reported a new car for Jackie Stewart. However, after some mechanical problems in the first training this rose for the following workouts as well as for the race back into the mature March 701.

Since the maximum speed of more decisive importance was on the high-speed Monza circuit, as the cornering speeds, drove at least in training, some drivers without the usual front and rear wings on their vehicles, including Jackie Stewart, Jochen Rindt and Denis Hulme.

Training

Ferrari confirmed in the first training the excellent result from Austria -GP by Jacky Ickx set the fastest time. Emerson Fittipaldi came in his first race in the Lotus 72 at high speed in the range of Parabolic off the track, slid down an embankment and came between trees at the edge of the track to a halt. Since he fortunately touched any of the trees, he was uninjured.

The following day the leading in the championship came from Jochen Rindt during the final training session at a nearly identical location of the track. Having been in the braking zone probably a brake shaft was broken, his car pulled abruptly to the left, there struck violently into the barriers and was badly damaged. Rindt was salvaged by the marshals and taken away in an ambulance, but died on the way to the hospital from his injuries. Lotus then pulled back the three remaining cars from the race weekend. After Bruce McLaren and Piers Courage Rindt was the third regular driver of the 1970 season, who died this year.

The training was continue, the best time of Jacky Ickx, however, was no longer undercut so that Ickx shared the front row with his team-mate Clay Regazzoni and BRM driver Pedro Rodríguez.

Race

Initially Jacky Ickx took advantage of his pole position to take the lead. However, he was overtaken in the fourth round of both Rodriguez and Stewart. Regazzoni also belonged to the leadership group and was finally on lap 10 for the first time take over the top position. By slipstream duels on the long straights, which had not yet interrupted by chicanes, it came almost in every round to a change at the top. During the race the lead but only moved a total of 28 times between first six various drivers in the second half of the race between Regazzoni and Stewart, because the field had been decimated by mostly technical defects. At the end Regazzoni rescued an edging ahead of Stewart to the finish and so came to his first Grand Prix victory.

The race was thrilling and dramatic, however, was of course overshadowed by the tragic events of the previous day. The victory celebrations on the part of the team Ferrari were correspondingly attenuated.
