Background

On the weekend before the British Grand Prix Pedro Rodríguez had come as a result of an accident at a race the Inter Series at the Norisring killed. He was at B.R.M. not immediately replaced, so that only two works cars were reported for the sixth world championship race.

Meanwhile, put the testing of the turbine-powered Lotus Type 56 continued. Works driver Reine Wisell drove the car this weekend, while his ancestral Lotus was acquired 72 by Dave Charlton.

McLaren and Surtees each reported a third works car for the race, piloted by Jackie Oliver or Derek Bell. A further addition of the field formed Mike Beuttler which his first Grand Prix contested in a private March.

Training

The training ended with no major surprises with Clay Regazzoni on the pole position next to the contemporaneous Jackie Stewart and Jo Siffert in the front row in front of Emerson Fittipaldi and Ronnie Peterson in series two.

Race

Shortly after the start collided in the back of the pack Graham Hill and Jackie Oliver. For both this already meant the end of the race, while the front two Ferrari of Clay Regazzoni and started from the third row Jacky Ickx took the lead.

In the second round Stewart and Siffert could overtake Ickx, respectively. In round four Stewart also overtook Regazzoni and thus took the lead. While he already could pull a gap there, and Siffert walked past Regazzoni. The ranking of the first three thus produced was then constant over several rounds. Meanwhile made ​​Fittipaldi, who struggled after a poor start by the field forward for the most attention.

On lap 17 Siffert had left defenseless in second place due to technical problems Regazzoni. The fourth-placed Ickx had until then drive in round 37 due to engine problems, the box and give up some laps later. Since Siffert ever fell back, Peterson took the third position.
