The Grand Prix of Argentina in 1972 was on January 23 held at the Autódromo Municipal Ciudad de Buenos Aires, and was the first race of the Formula 1 season 1972.

Background

With Tyrrell and Ferrari launched two of the best teams of the previous year with an unchanged team driver line-up in the new season.

For Lotus, where you took in the black and gold paint on the new main sponsor John Player now, Dave Walker was required, as second regular driver next to Emerson Fittipaldi, while Pure Wisell to BRM changed where he should contest the most races of the season on the side of Howden Ganley and Peter Gethin and various other riders. The plan was originally there to use up to six cars per race. Financial support for this project received BRM by Marlboro and therefore joined the former main sponsor from Yardley McLaren, Peter Revson where now stood next to Denis Hulme under contract.

The Team Brabham was sold by Ron Tauranac to Bernie Ecclestone. Graham Hill remained loyal to the team and won the Formula 1 newcomer Carlos Reutemann as new teammates, as Tim taverns stood at Surtees under contract to replace team founder John Surtees, the only occasionally wanted to attend the races.

In March was second team driver Niki Lauda next to Ronnie Peterson. Matra reduced its Formula 1 involvement permanently on only one vehicle, which continued to be piloted by Chris Amon.

Training

The new season began with a sensation by debutant Carlos Reutemann pole position ahead of Jackie Stewart sichterte at his home race. For the second row, the two McLaren -skilled Fittipaldi in the Lotus 72 and Clay Regazzoni in the Ferrari 312B2.

Race

Chris Amon had a gearbox problem in the warm-up lap and could not start up.

Stewart accelerated from the pole sitter Reutemann and assumed a leadership, which he did not relinquish it until the finish. Behind Reutemann to Fittipaldi had fought their way through a good start to Revson and Hulme over to third.

Within the next rounds Reutemann was first overtaken by Fittipaldi and shortly afterwards of Hulme. Then the order of the applicants over several rounds remained constant until Fittipaldi from round got 35 Transmission problems and fell back behind Hulme. A little later Reutemann had to pit to have new tires.

Since both the third place winner Fittipaldi and the fourth-placed François Cevert could not finish the race, Jacky Ickx came to a podium finish.
