Background

After a relatively short winter break 1 entered the formula in the shade of the oil crisis in the first run of the new season in Buenos Aires, where the long version of the local circuit was traveled for the first time, the ring included a wide loop around a lake.

For the first time in the history of Formula 1 got the vehicles before the first world championship race allocated fixed starting numbers that were valid for the entire season. In previous years, the numbers had been assigned individually before almost every Grand Prix.

Compared to the 1973 season, a strong change in the driver line with most teams was noted.

Ken Tyrrell had his team after the death of François Cevert and set up completely new to the retirement of Jackie Stewart and Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler committed as a team driver.

Although Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni remained teammates from this season, however, as a regular driver at Ferrari. The gap in the two B.R.M. left, was concluded with the two Frenchman Jean -Pierre and Henri Pescarolo Beltoise. In addition, a third works car was reported, with the François Migault drove another Frenchman.

Peter Revson left McLaren and was team-mate Jean -Pierre Jarier at Shadow. Revsons place at McLaren took Emerson Fittipaldi. Its cockpit at Lotus in turn was occupied with Jacky Ickx. The respective team-mates of the two, Denis Hulme or Ronnie Peterson, were among the few pilots who held their respective team from the previous year, the loyalty. Besides the two sponsored by Texaco and Marlboro car from Fittipaldi and McLaren Hulme planned year-round use of a third company car in the colors of the sponsor Yardley. This was first piloted by Mike Hailwood. Its place in the team Surtees Jochen Mass took one on the side of Carlos Pace.

Brabham started the season with Formula 1 newcomer Richard Robarts in the second car alongside regular driver Carlos Reutemann. The second race seat last year, Wilson Fittipaldi, had opted for an interruption of his racing career to devote himself to building his own team. A third Brabham was used by the private team John Goldie Racing as the customer's vehicle and piloted by John Watson.

The March works team undertook the German debutant Hans- Joachim Stuck and Howden Ganley also, who had left the team, Frank Williams Racing Cars. His previous position as the only regular driver of this team took a Arturo Merzario. Frank Williams continued his strategy from the previous year to let the second car will be driven by each paying guest starters, also reflected in the new season.

The team Hesketh Racing was planning to use a self-construction, but the season started as the previous year as March - customer team with James Hunt as a driver. The now almost 45 -year-old Graham Hill had a contract with Lola Cars and put their cars on their own one. The second cockpit beside him he occupied with Guy Edwards, the third overall Formula 1 debutant this weekend.

Training

Ronnie Peterson, who was nine times went from pole position in the race last year, continued this success story with his fourth pole position in a row away. The second launch site of Regazzoni Ferrari 312B3, however, was revised in after the crisis year 1973, a surprise for the traditional Italian racing team as well as for the professional world. Fittipaldi and Revson shared the second row. For an impressive fifth place James Hunt qualified in its modified by Harvey Postlethwaite March 731 Hesketh team.

Race

Behind Peterson, who realized his pole position into a guide, followed by a good start James Hunt. Behind Regazzoni, Revson and Hailwood reached one of the lowest curve and collided. While Hailwood was able to continue the race virtually unaffected to Regazzoni and Revson turned. Jarier could not avoid and drove into the car of his teammates on Revson, thereby excreting both Shadow. Merzario and Watson have also been slightly involved in the accident, Jody Scheckter was able to avoid on the grass next to the runway.

Even during the first round of playful Hunt by a spin his chances of a good result. Reutemann came thus to the second position before Fittipaldi, Hailwood, Ickx and Hulme.

In the third round, the local hero Reutemann took the lead, while Fittipaldi had to make a pit stop for technical reasons. As the now second placed Peterson later got a lot of brake problems, he was overtaken by Ickx and Hulme. Lauda overtook meanwhile Hailwood and shortly after went well past Peterson.

The fact that the box had to drive Ickx in the 27th round due to a puncture, Lauda got to third place. At the top Reutemann seemed to control the race. During the last few laps but it gradually went out of the fuel, which manifested itself in the form of misfires. On the last lap he was overtaken to the chagrin of the Argentine audience of six counterparties. Hulme won ahead of Lauda and Regazzoni, who had worked himself after the collision on the opening lap again gradually forward.
