Background

On the day exactly six months after its premiere last year a Grand Prix of Portugal as a World Cup race of the Formula 1 took place for the second time.

Shortly after the season opener in Brazil René Arnoux was surprisingly released from the Scuderia Ferrari. Stefan Johansson was then hired as the new regular driver Michele Alboreto addition, after Ken Tyrrell had agreed with Stefan Bellof on a contract extension in his team.

Was the first time present the German Zakspeed team with Jonathan Palmer as the only driver. For use was a racing car of the type Zakspeed 841, which had a four-cylinder turbo engine from its own production. Thus Zakspeed was next to Ferrari and Renault one of the few teams who produced their own engines.

Training

Ayrton Senna in the Lotus 97T secured the first pole position of his Formula 1 career. He pointed Alain Prost to the second place ahead of Keke Rosberg and Elio de Angelis in the second Lotus. Michele Alboreto and Derek Warwick formed the third row in front of Niki Lauda and Andrea de Cesaris.

Race

During the entire race day it was raining. Already in the warm up laps therefore unfortunate Nigel Mansell and Eddie Cheever, so they had to start with their respective T -Cars from the pit lane into the race.

Ayrton Senna defended its top position, which was supplemented by his teammate de Angelis, who had started from the fourth position from before the first curve to a Lotus -two lead. He was followed by Prost before Alboreto. Rosberg was not good away from his starting place. However, almost all counterparties could dodge the Williams. However, Palmer collided lightly with the almost stationary vehicle, and had at the end of the round due to excessive damage to his Zakspeed give up.

It turned out that the Pirelli wet tires seemed to be inferior to those of competitors Goodyear. Several renowned pilots fell back hopeless. The order of the first four pilots remained constant until the 30th round, with Senna goal for the lead over his second-placed team-mates in a remarkable way. Then Prost turned off, leaving thus Alboreto third place ahead of Patrick Tambay, Niki Lauda and Nigel Mansell.

In the 43rd round Alboreto moved past de Angelis. This fell back in the closing stages behind Tambay and thus was fourth ahead of Mansell and Bellof.

Ayrton Senna reached his first Grand Prix victory with a lead of over a minute ahead of second place. He also scored a Grand Slam.
