Background
The use of Gabriele Tarquini in the cockpit of a second Osella was discontinued, so the team took up again with only one car. In Zakspeed now both factory riders were equipped with the new 871.
Nelson Piquet, who had been injured in training for the Grand Prix of San Marino, could compete again.
Training
Nigel Mansell qualified with an opposite his second-place Williams team-mate Nelson Piquet by almost 1.5 seconds faster lap time for the pole position. This was followed by the two Ferrari drivers Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto ahead of reigning world champion Alain Prost at McLaren and Benetton driver Thierry Boutsen.
Due to rainy weather on Friday all drivers completed their fastest practice laps during the second qualifying session on Saturday.
Race
Mansell went to Senna, Piquet, Alboreto and Prost in the lead.
At the beginning of the second round Philippe Streiff lost in the Raidillon curve on output Eau Rouge control of his Tyrrell DG016. He then struck so strongly into the barriers that the back of the car, including engine demolitions. When the wreck was thrown back onto the track, the second Tyrrell driver Jonathan Palmer collided with it. Although both vehicles were badly damaged, both pilots were unhurt. The race was stopped to clear the accident scene.
When you restart Senna took the lead before Mansell. As this during the first round trying to overtake Senna collided the two and turned. Senna retired. Mansell was able to continue in second behind his teammate the first race until forced him damages in the 17th round to the task. Then Alboreto took second place ahead of Prost.
In the tenth round and Alboreto Piquet retired from due to technical problems, so the above third-placed Prost got a fight ahead. He was followed by Teo Fabi before Stefan Johansson and Thierry Boutsen. On lap 17 Prost Johansson built leadership from a McLaren - double guide.
In the 30th round Thierry Boutsen was not against Andrea de Cesaris defend his third place. Five laps later he left, so Eddie Cheever crossed the finish line in fourth place before Satoru Nakajima and René Arnoux.
