Nigel Mansell secured his sixth pole position in the eighth race ahead of Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Nelson Piquet. Michele Alboreto and Thierry Boutsen qualified for the third row in front of Andrea de Cesaris and Stefan Johansson.

Race

Due to a relatively poor start of the Pole Setters Senna came first in the lead. Mansell finished the first round with about a second behind the Brazilians, but arrived early in the second circulation past him. Senna was significantly slower and then gave the following pilots noticeably on. Prost overtook him shortly afterwards, Piquet followed one lap later.

In the seventh round Prost overtook Mansell and assumed by the tip. When the Frenchman was mounted in the 19th round at the box new tires, came again Mansell in the lead, but lost this position again four laps later, when he in turn lodged a pit stop. Two laps later, he dropped out due to an engine failure, making his teammate Piquet took the second place. Since Senna several times the box had to be controlled due to technical problems and Boutsen retired due to an engine failure, Johansson was at this time in third place.

Four rounds before the end of the race had to give up and let Piquet certain victory due to a defective alternator Prost. The Frenchman was classified seventh due to its distance traveled. Johansson was second, although he burst on the last lap of the right front tire and he had to cross on three wheels the finish line. Third place went Senna. The remaining championship points were awarded to Philippe Streiff, Jonathan Palmer and Philippe Alliot, which was favored among other things, that a total of only seven riders reached the finish. The last was Martin Brundle, who has not scored the winner because of its residue of ten rounds.
