Background

In terms of the field there was no change in comparison with the French Grand Prix at the weekend before.

Training

For the first time in the current season, no McLaren was on pole position but Gerhard Berger, the front row with his teammate Michele Alboreto shared. Only behind it followed the hitherto dominant in all training Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost before the two pilots March Maurício Gugelmin and Ivan Capelli.

Race

While Berger in the rain initially defended its leadership, Alboreto was already obsolete shortly after the start of Senna. Prost lost several positions and finally gave in round 24. The reason he gave to poor handling of the car.

Senna won after he had taken the lead by Berger in the 14th round. Nigel Mansell fought his way to the delight of the local audience up to second place forward. Alessandro Nannini completed the podium in third place before Maurício Gugelmin, Nelson Piquet and Derek Warwick.
