Training

Derek Warwick had a serious accident, which he survived but unharmed during training.

As mentioned in all the previous race weekends of the year Ayrton Senna secured the pole position. In the second place his McLaren team-mate Alain Prost followed before the two Ferrari drivers Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto. Alessandro Nannini and Nelson Piquet were the third row.

Race

Prost went through a opposite Senna better start to lead. The Brazilian followed in second place ahead of Berger and Alboreto. In the 19th lap he took the lead and defended this position until the checkered flag. Shortly before Benetton driver Thierry Boutsen was reached at both Ferrari over to third place.

Since both both Ferrari drivers and the second pilot Nannini Benetton could not finish the race due to technical difficulties, Nelson Piquet reached at the end of the fourth place ahead of Ivan Capelli and Jonathan Palmer.
