Background

In terms of the field there was no change compared to the Grand Prix of San Marino two weeks earlier.

Training

Stefano Modena was locked before the first training for the race weekend, because it did not comply with a request for weighing.

Again beat Ayrton Senna in qualifying his McLaren teammate Alain Prost, this time by 1.4 seconds. With a slower by about another 1.2 seconds lap time Gerhard Berger followed before his Ferrari team-mate Michele Alboreto. Nigel Mansell and Alessandro Nannini formed the third row in front of Derek Warwick and Riccardo Patrese.

The two Lotus drivers have recorded poor training results. As the reigning world champion Nelson Piquet qualified in eleventh, Satoru Nakajima missed the qualification.

Race

While Senna was able to defend its top position after the start, Prost lost his second place due to a switching error at Berger. It was only in the 54th round succeeded Prost, again overtake Berger. Senna had meanwhile moved out a lead of around 50 seconds.

In the 67th round Senna crashed due to a driving error in the porter curve. He returned then not in the box of his team back, but disappeared immediately in his apartment, which he possessed in Monaco.

Alain Prost won ahead of Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto. Derek Warwick took fourth place ahead of Jonathan Palmer and Riccardo Patrese.
