1989 UCI Road World Championships

The UCI Road World Championships 1989 were held in late August in the east of France Voralpenort Chambery. New world champions were among the professional drivers Greg LeMond (USA), with the amateurs Joachim Halupczok (Poland) and in the women's Jeannie Longo (France).

Track

The World Cup track was a circular course with a length of 12.3 kilometers. It led south of Chambery in the Savoie Alps, where on the Montagnole Pass, 1445 meters, the highest point was reached. The 2700 -meter climb to the pass has a slope of seven percent.

Professionals

On August 27, 1989 190 riders took to the start, among them the Soviet Active Alfa Lum team who were the first to participate in professional race as part of the perestroika in 1989. It ruled low temperatures, the final third of the race was affected by a storm. The circuit had to be 21 times overcome, leaving about 259 km were to drive. In the eighth round it, a group of nine riders, temporarily out down a lead of five minutes. In the penultimate round of the Frenchman Thierry Claveyrolat and Soviet athletes Dimitri Konyschew took a new advance, from which one of eleven leading group developed which jointly led the last round. In the finish five drivers subjected to the final sprint, among them the two winners of the 1989 Tour de France, Greg LeMond of the U.S. and Laurent Fignon from France. The Americans won the sprint with a bike length in front of Dimitri Konyschew while Fignon had already resigned before and was only sixth. Best German was Peter 's help in 16th place with only 42 seconds behind. Of the twelve launched German drivers were only five in first, the rest were affected by the storm tribute, along with other 143 participants.
