Background

Although the new team Andrea Moda had now paid the required appearance money, we opted not to participate in the second round of the season, as the two race cars of the type S921 could not be prepared in time for use. The rest of the message list corresponded to the season opener in South Africa three weeks ago.

Training

The two Williams drivers Nigel Mansell and Riccardo Patrese dominated qualifying, where Mansell was able to prevail over his teammate is. The Benetton driver Michael Schumacher and Martin Brundle were the second row before the two McLaren MP4/6B of Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna.

Race

Mansell went before Patrese, Senna, Brundle, Schumacher and Berger lead. In midfield Wendlinger collided with Ivan Capelli. During the second round Schumacher overtook his teammate Brundle. Senna dropped due to gearbox problems back first and retired after twelve rounds finally out.

The two Williams drivers succeeded the second double win in a row, both occupied their positions throughout the race. With Michael Schumacher finished for the first time since the Canadian Grand Prix 1977, a German pilot a place on the podium of a Grand Prix. Gerhard Berger was fourth ahead of Andrea de Cesaris and Mika Häkkinen.
