In the 2nd Bundesliga 1997/98 Eintracht Frankfurt reached, the SC Freiburg and 1.FC Nuremberg promotion to the Bundesliga.

Rise

The SC Freiburg managed to re- direct promotion to the Bundesliga, Eintracht Frankfurt returned after two years back in the makings. The more times German champions 1.FC Nürnberg tried and failed to march through as a freshman.

Descent

All newcomers were able to keep the class - even rose to Nuremberg. Three losers came from the territory of the former GDR Leipzig, Jena and Zwickau. The fourth was relegated to the SV Meppen, who remained without an away win as last and could only reach four away points.
