2000–01 Mestis season
The 2000/01 season was the first season in Mestis, the second highest Finnish Ice Hockey League, which replaced the I- divisioona. The first edition of the Mestis championship won Jukurit.

Regular Season
Mode
Each team had four play against every other team in the league. A victory in the regular season brought a team two points, a draw was rewarded with a point and a defeat in the regular season, there were no points.

Play-offs
Mode
Places 1-8 were qualified for the play- offs. For the semi-finals, the teams that had won in the quarterfinals against their opponents by five games, the most qualified. In the semi final was played also by the mode best-of- 5. The winners of those ties made it to the finals, while the losers in the small final played for third place. In the final five games were played again. Who won the most games, was the winner of the season. In the round for 3rd place, only one game was played.
The respective opponents were put together so that the highest placed team plays against the worst, the second best, second-worst against, and so on. A game lasted, as in the high season, a total of 60 minutes. After the regular time extensions were of 20 minutes duration was played until a winner is found by a decisive goal.

The two last-place teams in the Mestis and the winners of the play-offs from the Suomi- sarja entered into a qualifying round return match for the whereabouts in the Mestis or to move up against each other.

KalPa rose to the Mestis while KooKoo descent into Suomi- sarja. Ujk remained in Mestis and EPS continue in the Suomi- sarja.
