2009–10 Mestis season

The 2009/10 season was the tenth season in Mestis, the second highest Finnish ice hockey league. The Mestis championship won Jokipojat.

Main Round

Mode

Each team had four play against every other team in the league, and once against the Finnish U20 national team. A victory in the regular season brought a team three points, one win after extra two points and one defeat after extra time was rewarded with a point. For a defeat in the regular season, there were no points.

Play-offs

Mode

Places 1-8 were qualified for the play- offs. For the semi-finals, the teams that had won in the quarterfinals against their opponents by five games, the most qualified. In the semi final was played also by the mode best-of- 5. The winners of those ties made ​​it to the finals, while the losers in the small final played for third place. In the final five games were played again. Who won the most games, was the winner of the season. In the round for 3rd place, only one game was played.

The respective opponents were put together so that the highest placed team plays against the worst, the second best, second-worst against, and so on. A game lasted, as in the high season, a total of 60 minutes. After the regular time extensions were of 20 minutes duration was played until a winner is found by a decisive goal.

For the first time since the 1999/2000 season, there was once again climbing up and down 1 to 2 Finnish professional ice hockey league. The 14th of the SM - lliga played in a best -of -7 series against the champion of the Mestis.

The two last-place teams in the Mestis and the two best teams from the Suomi- sarja entered into a qualifying round return match for the whereabouts in the Mestis or to move up against each other.
