2001 Men's European Volleyball Championship

The Volleyball European Championship Men 2001 was held from 8 to 16 September in Ostrava instead. Yugoslavia won the title for the first time.

Mode

First, a preliminary round was held, in which the twelve teams were divided into two groups of six. The top two teams in each group reached the semi-finals. The third-placed and fourth played for places five to eight.

Qualification

The Czech Republic was set as host. The top five teams in the European championship in 1999 were also automatically qualified. These were Italy as the defending champion, the Second Russia, the Third Yugoslavia, the Netherlands Fifth and Sixth of France.

Sixteen teams played in May / June 2000 and a year later by a further six places. The group winners and the two best runners of the four groups of four teams reached the finals.
