2008 Dakar Rally

The 2008 Dakar Rally should be the output 30 of the Dakar Rally.

The rally should be started on January 5, 2008 in Lisbon, 20 January 2008 in Dakar, capital of Senegal, end.

Cancellation of the rally

The Amaury Sport Organisation, organizer of the rally, came on January 4, 2008, after consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the decision of cancellation of the event due to " direct threats against the race by terrorist groups." This was preceded by several triggered by terrorists attacks in Mauritania, where four French tourists and three soldiers were killed.

Participant

In the 2008 Dakar Rally wanted to start 570 teams. Among them were 245 motorcycles, 20 quads, 205 cars and 100 trucks.

Route

The rally should be started in Lisbon and through Spain, Morocco, Western Sahara and Mauritania to Dakar. The route distance of the rally would be 9273 km, of which 5732 km would be incorporated into the classification. For the January 13, a rest day in Nouakchott was planned.

As a consequence of the terrorist threats and the subsequent cancellation of the rally, the 2009 Dakar Rally and the subsequent following was not in Africa but in South America ( Argentina, across the Andes to Chile ) instead.

The Central Europe Rally was held in 2008 as a replacement event for the Dakar Rally.
