2006 Dakar Rally

The 2006 Dakar Rally was the 28th edition of the Dakar Rally. It started on 31 December 2005 in Lisbon and ended on January 15, 2006 in Dakar. There were 9043 kilometers traveled.

The favored Truck team of Jan de Rooy was disqualified before the start of the rally since its DAF trucks did not meet the regulations.

On 9 January 2006, the Australian motorcyclist Andy Caldecott died in a crash on the ninth stage. He was killed on the spot on the 13th stage died a ten year old boy who was struck by a vehicle. On the 14th stage, a twelve year-old boy was fatally injured by a support vehicle.

The Frenchman Luc Alphand won on Mitsubishi his first Dakar Rally. Behind him followed the South African Giniel de Villiers on VW Race Touareg 2 won In the bike rider Marc Coma in the trucks Vladimir Chagin.
