2012 Dakar Rally

The 2012 Dakar Rally was the 34th of the Dakar Rally and the 33, which was actually extended. It took place for the fourth time in South America.

The rally started on January 1 in Mar del Plata and ended on January 15 in Lima.

A total of 443 vehicles were at the start, 178 motorcycles, 30 quads, 161 cars and 74 trucks.

Route

The route has major changes compared to the previous years in several respects.

After the rally was previously held in the three years exclusively in Argentina and Chile, the route now led through parts of Peru.

In all previous South America Sweeps the rally was always organized in the form of a loop with start and finish in Buenos Aires. 2012, the Dakar Rally was first held as a point- to-point races with different start and end locations.

Note: The mileage shown are based on track length in the Car standings. At several stages, there was, however, different path lengths for the various vehicle classes, so partial, in that other -kilometer data for trucks or motorbikes / quads.

The sixth stage is canceled at short notice due to heavy rain and snowfall in the Andes on the border between Argentina and Chile. Furthermore, the location at 4700 m altitude border crossing at Paso de San Francisco was closed. At 8 clock local time, a convoy of all vehicles involved in the rally has made their way to the bivouac in Copiapo, where it was scheduled to be held on Saturday the 7th stage.

On the first day of racing, the Argentine Jorge Martinez Boero motorcycle racer was killed. After a fall, at 10:19 local time clock he suffered two kilometers before the end of the special stage cardiac arrest and could not be resuscitated.
