3rd Berlin International Film Festival

The International Film Festival Berlin 1953 were held to 28 June 1953 by June 18.

Summary

For the first time, the international visitors to the festival were aware of what kind of a world politically tense place it takes place: The day before the Berlinale was to be inaugurated, it was in the eastern part of the city to the workers' uprising. The festival has not been canceled, but there was a shadow from the start to the festival. 20 percent of the seats in the cinema had been reserved for visitors from East Berlin, which have now been hindered by barriers along the border in the visit of the festival. Some stars from the U.S. said their visit short, otherwise remained at the end of the financial losses the only negative impact of the political crisis on the festival.

Before the Berlinale there had been dispute for the money: In December 1952, the Berlin Senate decided to make painful cuts in the budget of the film festival. The finance minister criticized the management of the Film Festival and fixed-term contract of festival director Alfred Bauer contrary to previous agreements. Bauer took this as an affront and stepped back. Only tough mediation talks led to a withdrawal of most reduction plans, whereupon also Bauer withdrew his resignation again.

One of the stars of the festival was Gary Cooper, who told the press critically commented on the anti-communist Senator Joseph McCarthy, criticism that was recorded ambivalent about this historic time in Berlin. About the winning films were chosen for the second time only by a public vote. The Golden Bear went to The Wages of Fear (Le salaire de la peur ) Henri-Georges Clouzot of a decision, which was widely welcomed. Jacques Tati's quirky comedy The Mr. Hulot's Holiday (Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot ) took a lot of attention, but could not win a prize. For the third consecutive year, the German festival contributions fell by public and press.
