45th Venice International Film Festival

The 45th International Film Festival of Venice took place between 9 September 1988 from August 29. They count together with the International Film Festival of Cannes and the Berlinale the most significant film festivals in the world and was first held in 1932 in the Italian city of Venice.

In the 45th edition of the film festival was the main prize, the Golden Lion, the Italian director Ermanno Olmi for his literary film The Legend of the Holy Drinker. However, the greatest attention was the premiered out of competition film The Last Temptation of Christ. Martin Scorsese's film adaptation of the novel The Last Temptation by Nikos Kazantzakis had triggered violent protests of the Catholic Church even before its premiere.

Jury

The president of the jury in the feature film competition had taken over the Italian director Sergio Leone. In side were nine other members of the jury:

Movies

In the competition came to a total of 22 films. Italy was represented by a total of five films ( including two European co-productions ), France with four films ( including three co-productions). Four films were American productions. As a German -British joint work was Andrew Birkin's Burning Secret, an adaptation of Stefan Zweig's novella of the same name into the race. Switzerland was in competition with the film À corps perdu - represented unconscious of French-Canadian Léa Pool.

For the Spaniard Pedro Almodóvar film Women meant to be competitive on the verge of a nervous breakdown of the international break. He received the Osella for Best Screenplay at the Film Festival in Venice. However, the Golden Lion for best film went to the Italian production The Legend of the Holy Drinker, which was based on Joseph Roth's novel of the same name. Ermanno Olmi was already during the current competition as the big favorite for the grand prize.

  • Silver Lion - Best Director: Theo Angelopoulos (Landscape in the Mist)
  • Osella - Best Screenplay: Pedro Almodóvar ( Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown )
  • Osella - Best Camera: Vadim Jussow ( The Black Monk )
  • Osella - Best Production Design and Costumes: Bernd Lepel ( Burning Secret )
  • Osella - Best Film Music: José María Vitier, Gianni Nocenzi Pablo Milanes and ( Un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormous )
  • Special Lion for Lifetime Achievement: Joris Ivens
