5-bromo -4-chloro -3- indolyl phosphate ( BCIP ) is an artificial, a chromogenic substrate for the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (AP).
Properties
The enzyme alkaline phosphatase to hydrolyzed indolyl phosphate, 5-bromo -4- chlorindolyl and phosphate. The 5- bromo-4- chlorindolyl is, 4'- dichloroindigo oxidized by oxygen in the air to deep blue dye 5,5 '- dibromo -4.
As BCIP is sparingly soluble in many solvents, either the di-sodium salt (water soluble) or, more commonly, the p -toluidine salt ( soluble in DMF ) are used.
Use
In biochemistry BCIP is used in combination with NBT for sensitive detection of the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (AP ).
