8th Bavarian Reserve Division (German Empire)

The 8th Royal Bavarian Reserve Division was a federation of the Bavarian army in the German army during the First World War. The division was set up in December 1914 specifically for use in the mountainous terrain of the Vosges.

8 The Bavarian Reserve Division was from February 1915 to July 1916 on the Western Front in Upper Alsace, interrupted by a short-term use in June 1915 on the Eastern Front in Poland. From late July to August 1916 she fought in the Battle of the Somme. From October 1916 she was involved in the war against Romania. In October 1917, she came again to the Western Front in Flanders. In 1918 she was involved, inter alia, in the Spring Offensive of 1918. The association was classified by the Allied reconnaissance as first class.

The initial breakdown in the summer of 1915 was:

  • Royal Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment 23
  • Royal Bavarian Reserve Field Artillery Regiment No. 8
  • Royal Bavarian Reserve Field Artillery Regiment No. 9

The composition of the association changed several times. In the spring of 1918, the Division had the following breakdown at:

  • Bay. Reserve Field Artillery Regiment 9
  • [ zuget. ] II Dept. ( sächs ) Foot Artillery Regiment 19
