A. W. Watkins

Alfred Wilfred " AW " Watkins ( born December 1, 1895 in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England; † February 1970 in Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire, England ) was a British engineer and sound engineer, who was nominated four times for an Academy Award for Best Sound.

Life

Watkins began his career as a sound engineer in 1930 with the film Rookery Nook and worked in the following years especially with the film producer and film director Alexander Korda together in the London Film Studios in Denham. Following the acquisition of the film production company by Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer ( MGM) in the late 1930s, he was chief engineer and director of the sound department of Denham Studius. Throughout his continuing until shortly before his death, working as a sound engineer and sound engineer, he worked on the production of over 150 films.

At the Academy Awards in 1940 Watkins was first nominated for an Oscar for best sound and indeed for the film Goodbye, Mr. Chips ( 1939). Other Oscar nominations in this category followed by 1954 's Knights of the Round Table (1953 ), 1960 for Libel (1959 ) and most recently at the Academy Awards in 1966, together with Franklin Milton for Doctor Zhivago (1965).
