A.S.D. Castel di Sangro Calcio

The A.S.D. Castel di Sangro Calcio ( officially: Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Castel di Sangro Calcio ) is an Italian football club from Castel di Sangro in the province of L' Aquila in the Abruzzo region.

The greatest success of the club was the rise to Serie B in 1996, a remarkable achievement when one has in mind the fact that the place has only 5900 inhabitants. Even more remarkable is the fact that they held a second year in Serie B. The first year in Seria B was "The Miracle of Castel di Sangro " described by U.S. author Joe McGinniss in his book. The colors of the jerseys are red and yellow. The home ground of the association, the Teofilo Patini stadium has a capacity of 7,200 seats.

History

The history of football in Castel di Sangro began immediately after the Second World War, when the priest Don Arbete organized football for the local youth. But the league championship for the team launched in 1953 in Terza Categoria, the lowest of all the Italian leagues. The jump in the Seconda Categoria succeeded only after thirty years in 1983. Ascent of the Prima Categoria succeeded two years later. The difference between the Serie C1 and C2 was very large, there were in the C1 professionally run teams that had played some of them already in Serie A, such as Ascoli Calcio and U.S. Lecce. For the association of further stay in the Serie C1 would have been to evaluate a success, but by the second-place achievement qualified to opt for a playoff game against the AS Gualdo Calcio. This could successfully complete and qualified for a second playoff game against Ascoli, which was won on penalties.

The first year in Serie B was a turbulent and only in the penultimate game you could save the league. After descending the trail went up into the C2 and 2005 the club was excluded from the Italian football. The club re- established in 2005, now playing in the Abruzzo Excellency, the sixth power level of Italian football, which is contested in 28 regional leagues.
