  • 3.1 Tunnel de Serrières

General project

The A5 is congruent with the national highway N5 Luterbach - Biel / Bienne - Neuchâtel - Yverdon and is divided into three sections whose projected expansion level in the Federal Decree on the national road network is fixed. For sections that are not expanded as a motorway or highway ( National Road third class ) to continue the designation applies N5, she is portrayed as the main road 5

Sections

Luterbach -Biel East

The section Luterbach -Biel East is projected as a second-class national road and realized as a motorway; Since 2002, the section is one continuous section. The section was opened in three stages already with the construction of the N1 Luterbach was created and the N5 - section Luterbach - Zuchwil opened in 1971 along with the adjoining parts of the N1. About 30 years served this section only as Solothurn feeder road.

Only with regard to the Expo 02, the controversial highway was accelerated and finally approved by the voting citizens. On 31 May 2001, the A5 section Bözingenfeld ( Biel Ost) - Lengnau was opened. The last part of Lengnau - Zuchwil followed on 18 April 2002 - just in time for national exhibition.

Yverdon- West Biel

The section Yverdon- Neuchatel -Biel West is projected as national road second and third class, making it expanded very uneven. Between Twann and Le Landeron the N5 was created as a highway. The N5 - section of the junction on the A1 to Yverdon to Grandson was opened in 1984 as a motorway. In this section you will find the Viaduct of Yverdon, which is the longest viaduct of Switzerland with 3155 meters.

Mid-1990s was the construction of the continuation of Le Landeron under the city of Neuchâtel Neuchâtel Serrières through for connection that was created as a motorway.

In contrast to section Luterbach -Biel a completion of the A5 between Yverdon and Biel at the start of the Expo 02 was not possible. However, it was the main road 5 on 11 May 2002 will be directed to the far advanced highway segment Vaumarcus - Bevaix (7.5 km). Between Vaumarcus and the tunnel Sauges the southern roadway was released in oncoming traffic while the tunnel and the section were to Bevaix already traveled directionally. On 20 October 2003, the entire section was taken as motorways in operation.

On 28 November 2003, the housing Areuse was put into operation in order to allow the surface to various finishing works. Together with the section Grandson Vaumarcus also the 5.7 km long section of Bevaix - Areuse was opened on the 12th May 2005 the latter in November 2005 was partially only one lane until the completion of Chanélaz viaduct.

Remained Unausgebaut is a section between the half- connection Auvernier / Neuchâtel Ouest and the connection Serrières which is to be replaced by the Tunnel de Serrières. Due to the high costs and little benefit to the project by the intended completion date in 2006, far away. The N5 was expanded in this section since 1974 as a motorway and is now one continuous section; because it just one national road third class and in this section the main road is 5 passed over her, she is signposted as the main street with mixed traffic.

Also a national road third class in mixed traffic with the main road 5, the section between Twann and Biel (West) to be removed together with the Westast the " southern bypass Biel » to highway.

East Biel - Biel West ( southern bypass Biel)

The " middle " section Biel Ost ( branching Bözingenfeld ) - West Biel is provided as an urban national road second class and is one of the last completed sections of the Swiss national road network to be. The so-called southern bypass Biel consists of two branches: The eastern branch between Bözingenfeld and port will be built as a motorway, the western road between Port and West Biel runs as a highway through the city of Biel. Be linked to the two branches at the branch Brüggmoos at port, in which also the even upgraded highway A6 to be integrated, which leads today than T6 to Biel. With the construction of Ostasts was started in December 2007, the Westast is still in the planning phase. As a possible completion date of the responsible Federal official indicates the year 2016.

Expansion projects

Tunnel de Serrières

As a major arterial road in the west of Neuchâtel, the main street 5 was expanded in 1974 with Auvernier as national road third class twice on two tracks. When the city of Neuchâtel was tunneled mid-1990 with a highway, the western end of the city tunnel was connected to the removed section. Here, the underground highway access Neuchâtel Serrières and at tunnel portal of the half- connection Neuchâtel Ouest, of the feature as the main road a - respectively unthread the newly bound by national highway was built. When the enclosure Areuse was put into operation in November 2003, this was connected at its eastern end with the upgraded line at Auvernier. Again, the connection Auvernier half received only the function to weave the main road and the national highway respectively to disentangle.

The fact that a through connection of two separate highways direction on a main street with mixed traffic is not useful, has already been considered in the planning of the section Grandson Areuse Neuchâtel. Due to the topography and the spatial relationships the section in question has been configured as a 800 -meter tunnel and approved in January 2001.

The elaborate tunnel project that needs to be drilled in the Jurassic limestone partially below the level of Lake Neuchâtel has not been started with the other highway sections, as was demanded by various of a more favorable solution to the de facto already existing motorway section to search. By the delays in construction has begun on 23 March 2009, with a possible completion by 2013.
