Twann with St. Peter's Island

Twann (French Douanne ) was until December 31, 2009, a municipality in the district of Nidau ​​in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. She has merged on 1 January 2010 with the municipality Tüscherz -Alfermée to the municipality Twann - Tüscherz.

In addition to the community of a Reformed Congregation ( along with Tüscherz -Alfermée ) as well as a civic community exist.

Twann is 86.9 %, a German -speaking congregation. 6 % of the population are French-speaking.

Geography

Twann located in the Bernese Seeland on the north shore of Lake Biel. It consists of the districts Twann, Wingreis and Gaicht. The neighboring communities of north clockwise beginning are Lamlingen, Tüscherz -Alfermée, Ligerz and Prêles. Also for the township is part of the front of the St. Peter's Island which is adjacent to Erlach BE and Twannberg.

History

The first mention of this place was in 1185, back then it was called Duana. 1225 the place was then Tuanna. The place is mentioned by name in Friedrich Dürrenmatt's 1950 to published novel The Judge and His Hangman.

Traffic

Twann has a train station SBB at the Jurasüdfusslinie. There is also a boat landing for the ships of the BSG.

Schools and Institutions

Twann has a school in which the 3rd to 9th grade (Real, and secondary school ) will be informed. Because of the small classes in the communities Twann, Ligerz and Tüscherz -Alfermée the original three schools were combined to form the SchulenTLT. 1st and 2nd class will be held in Ligerz.

1980, designed by the architect Justus Dahinden Holiday Twannberg was inaugurated. The building complex was awarded the Grand Prix d'Architecture in 1981.
