The Abdi İpekçi Arena is a multi-purpose hall in the district of Zeytinburnu in the European part of the Turkish city of Istanbul. The arena was named after the journalist and chief editor of the newspaper " Milliyet " Abdi İpekçi, who was shot in February 1979 by the Pope's assassin Mehmet Ali Agca.

History

In the late 1970s, work began; but they were interrupted in the meantime. The Arena experienced so its inauguration in 1986. Overall, the hall holds 12,500 spectators. Periodically since 2009 the first division basketball Galatasaray Medical Park play (men, Türkiye Ligi Basketbol ) and (women, Türkiye Kadınlar Basketbol Ligi ), the basketball section of Galatasaray Istanbul, in the sports arena. Until recently, the basketball team Efes Pilsen Istanbul and Fenerbahçe Ülkerspor in the hall were located. Efes Pilsen wearing his matches at the Sinan Erdem Dome. The Final Four of the ULEB Euro League 1991/92 was held in the hall. The final of the European Cup Basketball 1995 between Benetton Treviso and Taugrés Vitoria ended in the Abdi İpekçi arena with a 94:86 victory for the Italians from Treviso. The first All-Star Game FIBA Europe FIBA Euro Stars 1996 was held on 30 December of the year in Istanbul Arena in front of 14,000 spectators. In the first All-Star Game since 1964, the East defeated the West with 117:114. The hall was one of three venues of the European Basketball Championship 2001 and also home of the Basketball World Championship 2010. During 2004, the Euro Vision Song Contest was held in the arena. Besides the city of Izmir, Istanbul was the venue of the Arena Abdi İpekçi Volleyball European Championship Men 2009. Among the European Short Course Swimming Championships 2009 in the sports arena, two 25 -meter pool were temporarily set up for the competitions.
