Acropomatidae

Verilus sordidus

The lantern bellies ( Acropomatidae ) belong to the perch family ( Percomorphaceae ). They live in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans at depths of several hundred meters.

Features

The fish are 10 to 40 inches long. They have two dorsal fins, the first with seven to ten hard jets, the second with one or no hard - and 8 to 10 soft rays. The anal fin has 2-3 hard and 7-8 soft rays. All lantern bellies have 25 vertebrae and seven Branchiostegalstrahlen. The species of the genus Acropoma have light organs. Her anus is sitting near the front, near the pelvic fin base, a feature otherwise found only in the seabass Bullisichthys caribbaeus and the cardinalfish Ostorhinchus gularis occurs in perch relatives.

There are over 30 species. The assignment of some species is uncertain.
