Adolf Frey

Adolf Frey ( born February 18, 1855 in Kuettigen, † February 12, 1920 in Zurich ) was a Swiss writer and literary historian.

Life

The son of the popular writer James Frey (1825-1875) studied German and received his doctorate in 1878 at the University of Bern Albrecht von Haller. After living in Berlin and Leipzig, he arrived in 1882 as a German teacher at the Old Canton Aarau. In 1883 he married the German historian Lina Beger ( 1853-1942 ). In 1898 he became a professor of German literature at the University of Zurich as a successor Jacob Baechtolds. The only Swiss Nobel, Carl Spitteler, he was on friendly terms. He died six days before his 65th birthday from cancer.

He devoted his scientific writings mainly of Swiss literature, particularly his role models and Gottfried Keller, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer. In addition, he gave works of Swiss poets such as Salomon Gessner or Gaudenzdorfer Johann von Salis - Buchen out and wrote poems, patriotic festivals and novels in the style of bourgeois realism.
