Adriaen van de Velde

Adriaan van de Velde (* 1636 in Amsterdam, † 1672 ) was a Dutch painter and etcher.

Life

Adriaan van de Velde came from an important Dutch family of painters and was the son of the artist Willem van de Velde (c. 1611-1693 ). The painter Willem van de Velde (1633-1707) was his brother. The exact date of birth is not known, but it is assured that he was baptized on November 30, 1636 in the Oude Kerk.

His first art class got van de Velde by his father. Through his good offices he later returned to Haarlem, where he became student of Jan Wijnants and Paulus Potter. In addition to the latter, especially Philips Wouwerman had great influence on van de Velde.

Back in his hometown working van de Velde some time in the studio of Karel Dujardin and was subsequently established himself as a freelance artist. At age 21, he married there on April 5, Maria Oudekerk. Besides his own works van de Velde also worked with many other landscape painters; among other things, he created humans and animals in the works of Jan Hackaert, Jan van der Heyden and Jan Wijnants.

1672 died painter Adriaan van de Velde. His funeral was held in the Nieuwe Kerk on 21 January.

Assessment

With his early work, van de Velde is still overshadowed by the Haarlem school and his models and Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem Paulus Potter. Later he found his own style and - despite the short duration of work - came to his death over 400 images ( list of works in Cornelis Hofstede de Groot ). His sketches, which originated in nature, constituted not only the submission of its carefully composed images, but were often " recycled " as etchings.
