Aegean Region

The Turkish Aegean Region (named after the Aegean Sea ), with an area of 79,000 km of the seven geographical regions of Turkey ² the fifth largest. The official name is " Ege region " (tr. Ege Bölgesi ). It represents about 10.1 % of the Turkish national territory and borders Central Anatolia, Marmara and Mediterranean region. This region is also known as the Turkish Aegean.

This region exists officially after the Geography Congress in 1941 in Ankara and is divided into two further sub-regions or areas.

Climate data

Population

According to the people counting in 2000, the population is 8,938,781 and the population density of 113 inh / km ² (TR- nationally: 88.25 inhab / km ² ).. . 61.5 % ( 5,495,575 ) of the population live in urban areas and 38.5 % ( 3,443,206 ) in the country. The annual population growth rate is 1.629 %.

Economy

The Aegean region is after the Marmara region, the second largest industrial area in Turkey. The power supply in the region is provided by the thermal power plants in Soma, Tunçbilek and Yatağan and the hydropower plants in Kemer and Demirköprü.

In İzmir outweighs the textile, food, automotive, petroleum and engineering industries as well as spare parts production. In the Gulf of İzmir is the salt mine Çamaltı, the largest salt production facility in the country.

The majority of the olive oil in the region is produced in Ayvalik and Edremit. In Afyon, Kutahya and Usak there are several sugar factories, where there is still a sulfur factory in Kütahya.

The city of Denizli is the most important textile center in the region and exports the majority of its products abroad. The carpet weaving is represented particularly in Demirci, Gordes, Kula, Simav and Usak. In Afyon there are significant deposits of marble, so that manufacturing plants were constructed on site. The cotton mill is widely used in Aydın, Denizli, Izmir, Nazilli and in Usak.
