Aeson

Aeson (Greek Αἴσων, Latin Aeson ) In Greek mythology, the son of Tyro and Cretheus, as well as the father of Jason and the Promachos. He has a brother and two half-brothers Pheres Pelias and Neleus.

Pelias was greedy for power and aspired to the dominion over all of Thessaly. To this end, he banished Neleus and lured Aeson in the caves of Iolcus. In the caves married Aison Alkimede and fathered several children with her. Jason, the most famous of these children, was sent to Cheiron to be trained there. Meanwhile, Pelias was warned by the Pythia at the Oracle of Delphi in front of a man with one sandal.

Many years later, Pelias held the Olympics starting in honor of Poseidon, when Jason arrived in Iolcus. This was only wearing a sandal, as he had lost the other in a river when he helped over a traveler. The frightened Pelias Jason asked what he would do if he met the man who was his destiny. Jason replied that he would send it to the search for the Golden Fleece. Pelias sent Jason adhering to this advice on the journey to find the fleece.

While Jason's absence Pelias thought that Argo had sunk and reported Aeson and Promachos of Jason's death, then killed himself with poison themselves.

In an alternative version Aeson survived until Jason and his new wife Medea came back to Iolcus. Medea severed Aeson neck, splitting his body and cooked him. Aeson was alive and was tapered. Pelias daughters wanted to emulate this and killed her father.
