Ahmad Toukan

Ahmad Toukan (Arabic أحمد طوقان, DMG Aḥmad Tuqan, Ahmed Touqan; born August 15, 1903 in Nablus, † January 1981 in Amman, Jordan) was a Jordanian politician.

Life

Toukan, the eldest brother of the famous Arab poet Ibrahim Toukan and Fadwa Toukan, studied post-school first engineering at the American University of Beirut and graduated in 1925 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Engineering ) from. A subsequent post-graduate studies in physics at the University of Oxford, he finished 1929 with a Master of Science (M.Sc. Physics ).

After Jordan's sovereignty from the United Kingdom on 25 May 1946 he held various positions in the Jordanian government as well as international organizations.

In 1951, he was the first time for a short time foreign minister. Between 1954 and 1961 he was a staff member of UNESCO, and at the same time also Deputy Head of Education at the United Nations Relief for Palestine Refugees in the Near East ( UNRWA). Upon completion of this activity, he was from 1962 to 1966 education expert at the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development ( IBRD).

In 1967 he was the second time for some time Jordanian foreign minister and held this office in 1969 for the third time. In addition, he was occasionally Minister of State and Deputy Prime Minister of Jordan.

Was toukan on 26 September 1970 as a non-party Prime Minister of Jordan. He was the successor of Muhammad Daoud to a crisis-ridden time and measures against Palestinian guerrillas of the PLO. Less than a month later he handed over on 28 October 1970, the Prime Minister's Office to Wasfi at- Tall, who twice was already Prime Minister.

In 1972 he was not only President of the Hashemite Royal Court, but also chairman of the board of the University of Jordan. Toukan died in early January 1981, according to a spokesman for the Jordanian royal palace after a long illness.
