The gills blind catfish ( Clariidae ) are a family in the order of the catfish -like ( Siluriformes ), which contains 100 species in 15 genera. Branchial sac catfish are common in Africa and the Middle East and in South and East Asia.
Features
A special feature of this fish family are Suprabranchialorgane ( bone -supported, well- vascularized surface enlargement of the pharyngeal mucosa above the gill arches with the purpose to use air - oxygen). This adaptation allows them to survive in oxygen-poor habitats. Some species can walk short distances over land. This, and the air breathing gills are blind catfish enabled to move from one pond to another. Common features are beyond: the long dorsal fin, which almost covers the entire back, the lack of a prominent first dorsal spine ( pinna), the wide gill openings and four pairs of barbels.
