Ajay Kakkar, Baron Kakkar

Ajay Kumar Kakkar, Baron Kakkar ( born April 28, 1964 in Dartford, Kent ) is a British physician, politician and life peer. He is Professor of Surgery and Dean for External Relations ( Dean for External Relations ) at the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary and Westfield College (January 2011).

Life and career

Kakkar was born in 1964 in Dartford, Kent. His father is the medical Vijay Kakkar, Professor Emeritus of Surgery ( Surgical Science ) at the University of London and founder and former director of the Thrombosis Research Institute, London. He attended from 1977 to 1982 the Alleyn 's Senior School ( Roper 's House ) and was School Captain Von 1981 until 1982. Later he studied medicine at King's College Hospital Medical School, University of London. In 1985, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1988 he obtained an honors degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. From Imperial College London 1998, he received his doctorate ( Ph.D.).

Kakkar was 1988-1989 Junior doctor ( House Physician ) and surgeon at King's College Hospital. From 1989 to 1992 he worked as a medical assistant (Junior Surgical Training) in surgery. From 1993 to 1996 he was a Clinical Training Fellow of the Medical Research Council ( MRC). He was then 1996-1999 Clinician Scientist Fellow.

Kakkar was 1999-2004 Associate Professor ( Senior Lecturer ) in the field of surgery and surgical specialist ( Honorary Consultant Surgeon ) at Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College London. At the Barts and London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary and Westfield College since 2004 he is Professor of Surgery ( Surgical Sciences) since 2004 and a specialist in surgery of the Barts and the London NHS Trust. In 2006 he became a specialist in surgery at University College London NHS Foundation Trust.

His research interests are in the areas of prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism and occurring cancer-related thrombosis, and particularly the role of antithrombotic therapy for life-prolonging measures in cancer and the role of the coagulation serine proteases influence in tumor biology.

Kakkar is Chairman ( Chair ) of the Clinical Quality Directorate of University College London Partners Academic Health Science Partnership, Director of the Thrombosis Research Institute London since 2008 and teaches and publishes on his specialty. He has also worked with the National Health Service ( NHS ) on its strategy for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE ).

Membership in the House of Lords

Kakkar was appointed on 22 March 2010 for Life peer as Baron Kakkar, of Loxbeare in the County of Devon and officially launched on the same day the House of Lords. He sits there as a Cross Bencher. In the introduction to the House of Lords he was supported by Terence Higgins, Baron Higgins, and Narendra Patel, Baron Patel. His inaugural address was delivered on 3 June 2010.

He is Chairman of the Board of Governors of Alleyn 's School in Dulwich since 2009, which he attended. He is also a trustee ( Trustee ) of the Dulwich Estate.

Kakkar is director of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland Foundation. He is a member of its Executive Board and the Supervisory Board ( Executive Board & Council). He also worked for Alleyn 's School Enterprises Ltd, a trading subsidiary of Alleyn 's School, Dulwich and Services Ltd., as well as for the Frederick Hugh House School Trust.

He is a member of the Trusteeship Council of the Thrombosis Research Trust and the charity London Pathway.

He is also occasionally worked on a fee basis for the pharmaceutical industry as a research consultant and expert in the field of thrombosis research; these included scientific activities, among other things ARYx Therapeutics, Bayer Schering Pharma, Boehringer Ingelheim, Bristol -Myers Squibb, Canyon Pharmaceuticals, Ersai Inc, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer and Sanofi- Aventis.

Honors

He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1992. Kakkar received, among others in 1996 the title of the Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the David Patey Prize of the Surgical Research Society of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1997 he received the Knoll William Harvey Prize of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. In 2006 he became a Fellow of the James IV Association of Surgeons. In 2009 he gave the inaugural lecture (Welcome Lecture ) at the Royal Society of Medicine.
